OpenJustice joins Mila Ventures Studio

OpenJustice is one of the latest spin-offs from Mila Ventures Studio, moving the work that started at the Conflict Analytics Lab into its next phase.

It’s official: OpenJustice is one of the latest spin-offs from Mila Ventures Studio, moving the work that started at the Conflict Analytics Lab into its next phase.

The big idea: most law never gets written down. It happens in settlement rooms, mediation calls, negotiations, and the judgment calls of experienced practitioners. Only a small fraction of cases ever reach a published decision, and that’s all today’s legal AI gets to learn from.

OpenJustice is going after the rest. It captures a firm’s unwritten expertise and turns it into small reasoning models that plug directly into the AI tools the firm already uses. The team is also working toward Canada’s first supercomputer for legal AI.

This builds on partnerships already underway with Deel, Miller Thomson, Pro Bono Ontario, and several Bay Street firms, along with support from Harvard’s Access to Justice Lab, Pro Bono Students Canada, Stanford CodeX, CDL-Montreal, Queen’s Law, and Cornell Law School.

What about the open-source side? The spin-off exists to serve industry partners. OpenJustice’s open research program, this community, and the Conflict Analytics Lab are staying at Queen’s.
